I’ve arrived in your inbox today to offer you one word during these tumultuous times:
This is not an airy-fairy, woo-woo tip; it’s a Physiological suggestion to help your body and mind.
When you’re in fear, you connect to the lizard brain (the limbic part) and the sympathetic nervous system. When this happens, the Human Instinct for survival kicks. It’s the instinct that has driven us as a species since being a cavewoman.
Think: Fight, Flight or Freeze.
When you’re in this space and you take a moment to BREATHE…
(Take a deep breath in and out. Do it right now while you are reading this!)
… You automatically engage your parasympathetic nervous system.
This calms you down and you can start thinking with the pre-frontal cortex of your brain (the part of your brain that thinks logically). You can overcome your human instincts with a CHOICE.
Victor Frankl – a neurologist, psychologist and survivor of the Holocaust – said it perfectly:
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is the power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. “
You can create that space by using your BREATHE.
Deep breaths IN and OUT.
