The Power of Reflection

Posted on December 15, 2009

The end of the year is a natural time to sit back and reflect on the past year (or even decade) and to take the lessons from 2009 with us into 2010 to ensure that we grow, prosper and thrive.

Most people don’t give the REFLECTION process the necessary time to receive the POWER, benefit and impact of the process.

Why is Reflection so powerful?

To be a really effective human being, reflection is one of the key processes that you should be regularly engaging in.

The reflection process is

THINK        then        ACT        then        REFLECT   then

THINK        then        ACT        then        REFLECT

And so it repeats.

We live in the modern era that venerates thinking and acting but because we feel so time-starved due to all our ‘doing’ we spend very little time reflecting.  We live in the “do-do-do” world – where we are so busy being busy that we often don’t know what we were so busy being busy about!

But the learning lies only in Reflection like a piece of gold waiting to be discovered in a treasure chest.  It is in reflection that we comprehend what works and what isn’t working in our lives.  It is only through reflection that we can break the negative patterns and cycles that we get into.

Two weeks ago, I did a Possibility Evening on the topic of The Power of Reflection and over 2 hours I waved my wand and took people through the reflection process and wow, it was transformational for many of the people in the room.  Realizations and learning popped like popcorn in the room and the participants discovered the golden nugget lessons that the Universe had given them in 2009.

So if you would like to do the same process….  Get your notebook or dream journal out and get ready to write…

Consider 2009 from the beginning of the year and month-by-month write down the following

  • Keywords for key events and experiences in that month
  • Lessons learned during that month

Eg.

January

New years in Argentina.  Finished first draft of book. Met Matias the gorgeous Mountain Man. Buenos Aires.   Workshops.  Launched Growing Wings.

Lessons Learned
Being in flow and surrender
Allowing creativity to come out whenever and however it wanted
The power of feminine energy in creation

November

Ballito.  Help Michelle with Art Project.  Great Money Magic Talk. Car Accident.
Birthday. Got Pneumonia. In bed.

Lessons Learned
Slow down
Be kind and gentle to myself and others
Am I doing things out of fear or faith?

Now go back through your whole year and consider the things that you are unhappy about or the things that cause you pain, anxiety or stress.   Write down these events and then write down the blessing that came from this event or the reason why you are grateful that this event actually happened to you.

Eg.
Car Accident

Was a blessing because it made me realise that I am vulnerable and mortal and that I need to be more careful with myself, instead of just rushing through life pretending I’m super woman. It made me slow down.

If you can find the blessing and be grateful for every experience that you perceived negatively in your year, you ‘neutralise’ the effect of that event and you learn the lesson from it.   This means that the Universe does not need to send you the lesson again in another form.

Once you have done this exercise then consider and answer the following questions…

What have been your Key Successes in 2009?

What has not worked in 2009?

What do you want to leave behind in 2009?

What do you want to take into 2010 with you?

Once you have written down the answers to all these questions.  Summarise the key lessons into 2 or 3 points for you to remember in 2010.   Then write these 3 or 4 points onto a card and keep this card in your bag or wallet.

Eg.  Mine for 2010 are

1.    Be Kind and Gentle – to myself, to other and to the Earth.
2.    Keep it simple
3.    Am I doing things out of a feeling of faith or fear?
4.    I am not my work

Spending an hour or two doing this process of reflection will create a very powerful platform for you for 2010.  At the beginning of 2010 I will be posting with tips and tricks on how to make 2010 a phenomenal year!

Would love to hear your comments about what realisations have come out of this process for you… comment below…

Taking into 2010 with me:
An attitude of gratitude
A desire to learn new things all the time
Not to stand in my own way
To face the fear and do it anyway

and thanx for all the Fairy Dust, Donna! Hugs!
