Follow what Fascinates You!

Joseph Campbell an incredible American mystic said that the secret to life was to “follow your bliss.”  While I completely agree with him, I find that often people are not sure what their bliss is and so my advice as a Fairy Godmother is to “follow what fascinates you!”

If you watch children as they go about their lives, you will see that they are not only incredibly present but that they flit from fascination to fascination.  They can be fascinated one minute with the jingling and taste of keys and the next they are squelching their toes into the earth and sniffing a big flower.

It is this following of fascination that allows us to learn about what we like and don’t like when we are little, but as we experience the metamorphosis from childhood into adulthood, we often forget to continue this practice.  We get stuck in the mundane and day-to-day hum drum of life and then complain when our lives seem to lack sparkle and feel really quite boring.

I was at a party on the weekend and was dancing next to a man who leant over to me and said, “can you hear all the different strands that make up this music?”  I wasn’t sure what he was talking about, so I asked him to explain and it was as if he took me by the hand and led me on a journey through his fascination with music as he pointed out the different beats and the riffs.  His face was animated, he spoke passionately and he had goosebumps  on his arms as he shared with me the different things that he could hear.  This is was clearly a man who is FASCINATED by MUSIC.   I then asked him what he did and he told me he was a mechanical engineer, but his BIG DREAM is to DJ at a party for 10 000 people.

The BIG Dream always lies in following what fascinates you and so too does your genius.  The key to your success, meaning, purpose and aliveness all lies in following what fascinates you!
