Self-Sabotage and Inner Beliefs

Posted on September 10, 2008

I recently received an email from one of the Daring Dreamers who has done one of the Dream Mapping and Goal Setting Workshops.  She has a very intersting question, which may unlock something for you in your own life….

Donna, there’s something I’d like to ask you about that we didn’t discuss about manifesting your dreams and goals. Sometimes the way we feel about ourselves prevents us from achieving our dreams. For example, we may want to be rich and famous (sorry, very obvious example!), but inside don’t feel as though we deserve that fame or wealth, or both, and so keep sabotaging that dream, no matter how many affirmations or visualisations we do. What would be the way around this? How would you suggest someone deals with this?
And how do you find out what your core belief about your dream may be?

Dear Daring Dreamer

Thank you so much for your very valid question!   Yes – I certainly know about the concept that our core inner beliefs determine our reality.  However in my work, I don’t necessarily believe that one should go back to the basic negative belief and then try and “root” it out.  This is almost like believing that there is something “wrong” with us, that we have to fix or change before we live our dreams…. I don’t think that this is necessarily the case.

The exercise of visualizing your WIG (wildly improbable goal) or dream, every morning for 5 minutes using all 5 senses for a period of 30 days is the best way of changing past behaviours and patterns.  I see that you mention that people keep “sabotaging” their dreams no matter how many affirmations or visualizations they do – this is not really the case.  What happens is that people do their affirmations or visualizations for a week or two and don’t see immediate results and then give up.  We are a society obsessed with immediate results, we live in what I call a “microwave-era” where a meal that used to take 2 hours to prepare now takes 1 minute – we want results and we want them NOW, and we are not really prepared to put in the work to get them.   The problem is that most people lack the discipline to do the affirmations or 5 senses outcome  (I call it this rather than visualization, because it is about using all 5 senses) every day for 30 days and then blame the lack of results on “self-sabotage” or deep seated beliefs that they don’t have any control over… this is a very convenient way of going back into victim mentality eg. “my beliefs run me”  rather than “wow, if I do this every day for 30 days, my life will be transformed”.

So the way around this or the tools that you need are to do the exercises that I have explained to you in the workshop everyday for 30 days.

I trust that this answers your question.

Wishes and Magic

Donna

P.S. Serendipity!
